Saving Our Style’s is doing art now?…
Hip hop is much more than music–it is a culture of its own. From the music, to clothing, footwear, styles of dance, slang terminology, and general worldview, the intricacies of hip hop are only known by its participants. People who do not participate in certain aspects of hip hop culture would be hard pressed to know the full scale of what is being communicated in rap music, or even the nonverbal signals broadcast via dress or dance. For those with little knowledge or interaction with hip hop culture, hip hop music and the visuals that accompany it are a glimpse into a different world.
The 1990′s were considered the “Golden Age” of hip hop. During this era, hip hop, which was once considered a fad, solidified its presence in the American cultural landscape. It was during this era that rappers put out an impressive run of classic material. Also the 90′s were when middle America started to take notice of hip hop as the culture penetrated everything from sports to pop culture.
90′s State of Mine is an exhibit curated by Savingourstyle.com. It is a recreation of a bedroom of an anonymous adolescent during the 1990s who happens to be a fan of hip hop. A teenager’s bedroom, like hip hop culture in general, is in many ways its own self-contained world within the larger world that it exists. The toys, music, video games, posters, and other items in a room of a teenager are a glimpse into the mind of the person who resides in the bedroom.
The various influences of a teen, from video games, to athletes and music artists the teen views as role models, are represented in the bedroom, which becomes a place where the teen fully immerses themselves in those influences. The bedroom is place of imagination where the teen dreams of themselves as their favorite rapper or professional athlete. The orientation of different objects may appear to exist without rhyme or reason to visitors of the bedroom, but it all makes perfect sense to the teen that procured the items and designed the layout of the room.
